things from around the internet vol. 1

The Internet is honestly such a weird and fascinating place and sometimes I find things that (I think) are pretty cool and also I think everyone else should look at the things as well. Hopefully, you find them just as interesting/useful as I do or you know someone else who would!

The Skimm

For when you’re a busy on-the-go millennial who also wants to stay on top of news in case it comes up at the water cooler or, y’know, you just want to be aware of what goes on in the world. The Skimm sends daily emails to your inbox that tells you the news and also relevant context so you have a better understanding of what’s going on. The link above is indeed my referral link – I don’t even think I get anything more than some swag (but I love swag so it’s fine) but I will feel a little less shame when I see the number of referrals in my inbox every morning.

Binging with Babish

I love food and I love film + television, but not nearly as much as this guy. He makes videos about the foods in pop culture and it’s all very high-quality content with a healthy splash of alcohol and sarcasm. It does kind of require you to have knowledge of the show/movie being featured for maximum enjoyment, but if you’re not familiar with the context of the food you can still watch and appreciate the recipe (and sass) component. He’s really blown up over the last few months so he’s posting content pretty frequently (bless). I love him and would pay a lot of money to be his roommate who gets to eat all this food.

My favourite one is the turkey sandwich from Friends, 1) because I have watched this episode probably 20 times in my life, and 2) because he makes a whole goddamn turkey for this sandwich.

Do you love hearing about people’s weird bosses/coworkers/other work stories? Or probably a more likely scenario – do you want decent career advice while hearing about weird bosses and coworkers? I recommend you clear a couple hours and start clicking away on this blog. Alison Green answers all your work-related questions on AAM and it’s so easy to lose most of your day because you got sucked into her blog.

I’ve read a lot of crazy stuff on this site but this one is probably the most hilariously ridiculous by far. I’m just giving you this one post to start with – it’s entitled “a coworker stole my spicy food, got sick, and is blaming me”. Right?

I stumbled upon this site this term while I was job hunting (and as of this moment of writing, I’m still job hunting) and it’s actually pretty solid in terms of not-just-pyramid-scheme-postings. (Other career pages that I like include Indeed, Techvibes Job Board, StartupNorth, and LinkedIn of course. TalentEgg is okay but I personally never see anything that I am interested in on there.)

spring cleaning vol. 2

// food //

Now that your closet is a little leaner (check out my post on cleaning out your closet if you haven’t read it yet!) let’s chat about food! I know that spring tends to be when everyone starts trying out new diets and cutting back. We may all have differing opinions on the necessity of a diet but I think we can all agree we can at least assess the things we’re eating to be a bit more mindful. My personal weakness is processed meats – salami is just too delicious for its own good. But I also like trying out new foods and eating cleaner at least helps balance my overall diet so I feel a bit less bad about the number of Oreos I can consume in one sitting.

spring cleaning vol. 1

Seeing as how spring is right around the corner (ignoring the sudden blizzard in mid-March) I thought it would be fun to do a spring cleaning series! The first area of spring cleaning I’ll be talking about is your closet. Well, my closet. Hopefully, this will help you clean out your closet too!

// closet //

I purge my closet seasonally, partially because my closets are never big enough to hold more than a season’s worth of clothing at a time, and mainly because co-op has me moving every 4 months anyways. (I’m also wondering if I ever really thought through enrolling in a co-op program because I definitely didn’t fathom the sheer amount of moving I’ve had to do over the last 3.5 years.) The moving really helps with keeping clutter down because moving is already a hassle and who wants to move extra things if they don’t have to?

apps, extensions, and tools – oh my!

Hello and welcome to another edition of apps + chrome extensions + nifty sites with Vicky!  I honestly need to sit down and come up with a better name for these things, it’s getting to be kind of a mouthful. I know I normally do these separately but I haven’t been doing anything drastically different lately to warrant two posts.

tl;dr of this post – icon pack + calendar widget // photo editing // new tab page that swears at you // i miss jobmine // infographics

If any of the above even vaguely interest you keep on reading!

intern fashion – winter 2017

(The alternative titles to this post were “co-op clothing” and “sartorial struggle” because I will forever love alliteration.)

Having gone through 3 co-op terms and a summer office job, I feel like my wardrobe has seen many iterations of my business-casual clothes. I’m really enjoying what I’ve been able to wear this term especially since my commute is super easy (read: no real need for clunky winter boots) and I’ve finally settled into a comfortable colour scheme + personal style.

If you glance at this summary grid of my favourite work outfits of this term you can pick up on the fact that I don’t wear colour and that I’m a huge fan of sweaters and asymmetrical hems.

summary of most of my outfits – can you tell that colour isn’t my jam?

things that you probably don’t need but also definitely need

This post will look like it was on its way to the BuzzFeed headquarters but got distracted by my a e s t h e t i c s and ended up on my blog instead. Now that it’s officially December, I’ve rounded up a few cool gift ideas that hopefully your friends and family have yet to receive so you can still claim originality! And if I’m being super honest, I want everything on this list so if any of you are wondering what to get me for Christmas…well. The real challenge is buying it for me before I crack and just buy the things for myself.

spotlight on: just love pie

tumblr_kul5zq3sss1qzxpwao1_1280

The scene above might be in my top 10 Marshall moments from How I Met Your Mother because not only do I love charts, but I also really love pies. I don’t know why I ever bother telling people that I love pies because I’m pretty sure we all love pies so that’s just a given. Right?

I can’t imagine what you don’t love about a delicious baked pastry with fruit and things in the middle that you are encouraged to eat with a side of ice cream.

This whole preamble was to get you excited for the fact that Waterloo has a new pie cafe! Spoiler alert, a pie cafe is deliciously amazing.

confirmation of life + #onrepeat november

Contrary to my radio silence on this blog since the beginning of the month I’m still here! November has been a crazy busy month – it’s been a lot of head down work on group projects and last week was my Model G20 Conference. There’s only 2-ish weeks left in this term and I still have 3 papers and a presentation left – how?!? Also I’ve yet to find a co-op job for next term and I can’t say that the looming uncertainty is helping keep my nerves at bay at all.

But I’m having interviews and there are other exciting things happening in my life so I’m not just moping on my couch all the time. If you do want to mope on your couch, or go for a nice fall walk (not to spring awkward weather talk on y’all but it’s beautiful today!) I’ve put together another #onrepeat playlist that critics have described as ‘eclectic’ and ‘only half-heartedly sorted’. It’s much longer than my playlists usually are because I’ve been building it up for a few weeks now but I hope you enjoy it!

spotlight on: balzac’s coffee (kitchener)

Supposedly there is to be a Waterloo location of Balzac’s soon but that mythical location has not opened yet (to my knowledge) and I am very sad that I still have to go all the way to Kitchener for dope coffee. Honestly, it’s worth the trek, but we really need to be bringing more of these cute coffee shops to Waterloo.

essential app roundup: fall 2016

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of my app posts and in that time I’ve accumulated more apps that I use on a pretty regular basis that I think would be super handy for people (students particularly!) . This collection has everything from more calendar widgets to fun tools for social media!
